Learning New Artistic Processes

Learning New Artistic Processes

Recently we bought a much needed glass grinder, a new tool in our artistic arsenal. My daughter, Rose, took the helm of this exciting addition. However, in her eagerness, she overfilled it, and the plug wasn't secured tightly. Water started spilling everywhere, reminiscent of our initial learning experiences. It was a moment of realization. Just like the water finding its way outside the grinder, we can often find ourselves spread thin, not focusing on what truly matters in our learning journey.

Embarking on a journey of learning new and challenging artistic processes can be both exhilarating and daunting. As an artist and business owner, I've often found myself facing unfamiliar territories, and the key to navigating these waters successfully lies in a strategic approach. Here are some valuable steps that have proven instrumental in my continuous learning process:

1. Immerse Yourself in Visual Learning

When confronted with a new artistic process, I go beyond reading about it – I dive into the world of video tutorials. Watching experts in action, observing their mechanics, and understanding the products they use provides a tangible grasp of the process. Visual learning can be a powerful catalyst for absorbing complex techniques.

2. Thorough Research is the Foundation

Knowledge is power, and the foundation of my learning process involves extensive research. Beyond videos, I delve into written resources, articles, and blogs. This helps me gain a comprehensive understanding, exploring different perspectives and techniques associated with the process.

3. Learn from the Community

One of the most enriching aspects of learning is being part of a community. Online forums, social media groups, and discussion platforms offer a unique opportunity to tap into the collective wisdom of fellow artists and professionals. Reading posts, learning from shared experiences, and picking up tips can significantly expedite the learning curve on finding new ways and new artistic processes.

4. Be a "Fly on the Wall"

There's immense value in being a silent observer, absorbing insights as a "fly on the wall" in the professional realm. Watching other professionals work through common problems, sharing solutions, and learning from mistakes fosters a sense of camaraderie. It's like having a backstage pass to the challenges and triumphs of those who've mastered the craft.

5. Apply, Experiment, and Iterate

Theory is essential, but nothing beats hands-on experience. I make it a point to apply what I've learned, experimenting with the new process. Embracing the learning curve and allowing room for mistakes opens the door to creative exploration. Iteration is key – each attempt refines the skill and brings me closer to mastery.

Navigating the unknown can be intimidating, but by immersing yourself in visual learning, conducting thorough research, engaging with the community, being a keen observer, and embracing hands-on experimentation, you can turn the challenge into a rewarding adventure. Remember, the beauty of art lies in its ever-evolving nature, and each new skill acquired adds a vibrant layer to your artistic journey.
